Choosing a dance class for your child is one of those decisions that feels simple on the surface — and then suddenly you’re comparing syllabi, googling the difference between lyrical and contemporary, and wondering whether your six-year-old is ready for tap. We get it. We have been helping families in Mount Pearl and across Newfoundland navigate this exact question for over 45 years, and the answer is almost always the same: the right class is the one that makes your child excited to walk through the door.

That said, a little guidance goes a long way. Here is what we tell families when they come to us unsure of where to start.

Start With Your Child, Not the Style

The most common mistake parents make is choosing a dance style before considering the child. A class that looks impressive on a schedule means nothing if your child is bored, overwhelmed, or simply not ready for it.

Ask yourself a few simple questions first. Does your child love music? Do they gravitate toward movement naturally, or do they need more encouragement? Are they social and energetic, or quieter and more introspective? Are they interested in performing, or do they just want to move and have fun?

There are no wrong answers. Dance has room for every personality — the child who wants to be centre stage and the one who just wants to feel the music. Knowing your child’s temperament gives you a much better starting point than any style description ever could.

Consider Where They Are, Not Where You Want Them to Be

It is natural to have ambitions for your child. But the fastest path to a dancer who loves what they do is meeting them exactly where they are right now.

A child who has never danced before does not need an advanced class — they need a foundation. A child who has been dancing recreationally for a few years might be ready for more structure, technique, and challenge. And a teen who has discovered a passion for movement might be ready to explore the rigour of an accredited exam stream.

At every stage, the goal is the same: build confidence, develop skill, and keep the love of dance alive. A class that is too advanced too soon can do real damage to both technique and motivation. A class pitched at exactly the right level does the opposite — it opens doors.

Understand What Different Styles Offer

Once you have a sense of your child as a mover, it helps to understand what different dance styles actually develop. They are not interchangeable — each has a distinct focus, physical demand, and artistic personality.

Classical styles like ballet build the technical foundation that underlies almost every other form of dance. Posture, alignment, musicality, and discipline are all developed through classical training, and many students find that time spent in ballet makes them stronger across every other style they pursue.

Expressive styles like lyrical and contemporary are a natural fit for children who feel music deeply and want to tell stories through movement. These styles tend to attract children who are emotionally intuitive and creative.

High-energy styles like jazz, jazz funk, and hip hop appeal to children who thrive on energy, rhythm, and attitude. These classes tend to be fast-paced, current, and a lot of fun — and they build strength, coordination, and confidence in ways that translate well beyond the studio.

Cultural and traditional styles like Irish dance offer something unique: a connection to heritage, a highly specific technical tradition, and a competitive community that spans the globe. For children drawn to precision, rhythm, and belonging to something bigger than themselves, Irish dance can be transformative.

Theatrical styles like Broadway and musical theatre are perfect for the child who loves to perform — the one who has been putting on shows in the living room since they could walk. These classes combine dance, character, and storytelling in a way that is genuinely joyful.

Ask About the Teaching Environment

Style is only part of the picture. The environment in which your child learns matters just as much — arguably more.

When you are evaluating a dance school, ask about class sizes. Smaller classes mean more individual attention, more correction, and faster progress. Ask about the qualifications of the instructors — not just their performance background, but their teaching credentials and experience with children at your child’s age and level. Ask whether the school offers structured progression through recognized syllabi, which gives your child clear goals and externally validated achievements as they advance.

And pay attention to how the school makes you feel when you visit. Is it warm? Do the students seem happy? Does the faculty take time to know each child as an individual? The culture of a school shapes the experience as much as any program offering.

It Is Okay to Try More Than One

One of the things we love most about working with young dancers is watching them discover what they love. And that discovery rarely happens on the first try.

Many of our most passionate dancers started in one style and found their home in another. Some study multiple styles simultaneously and love the variety. There is no rule that says a child has to commit to one discipline immediately — exploration is part of the process, and a good school will support that.

If your child tries a class and it does not click, that is not failure. That is information. Keep exploring. The right fit is out there, and when they find it, you will know — because they will not want to stop.
